The son of an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) village sarpanch was shot dead after unidentified assailants opened fire outside a gurdwara in Chite Kalan village in Punjab’s Amritsar district on Monday night. The victim’s friend sustained injuries in the attack and is undergoing treatment, police said.
The deceased, identified as Teerth Singh, was the son of village sarpanch Paramjit Kaur. According to preliminary information, Teerth had visited the gurdwara along with his friend, Ranjeet Singh. As the two were leaving the religious premises, the attackers, who were allegedly waiting outside, opened fire on them.
The assailants reportedly fired seven to eight rounds, leaving Teerth critically injured. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Ranjeet Singh also sustained bullet injuries and is reportedly out of danger.
Preliminary investigations suggest that an old rivalry could be behind the killing. Police have initiated an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.
The killing comes amid growing political tensions over incidents of gun violence in Punjab. Opposition parties have repeatedly targeted the ruling AAP government, raising concerns over law and order in the state following a series of shooting incidents in recent weeks.
Police are investigating the case, and further details regarding the accused and the possible motive are awaited.
